How to Avoid Iron Deficiency
The lack of iron in blood can lead to various health complications including anemia. The disease is caused by lack of sufficient iron in blood. Anemia has become less dangerous than it used to be in the past. More research about the disease has enabled doctors and scientists to come up with more varieties of foods rich in iron. The foods when taken will improve the levels of iron in the body. There is the use of supplements from iron as an option of maintaining optimal levels of iron in the blood in patients who suffer from Anemia. The better option may be to include foods rich in iron in your diet because these have high levels of iron compared to the supplements. It will be seen that iron deficiency is more common among young kids and toddlers. This could be because they are most likely to drink milk and forget about taking foods rich in iron. Parents can ensure that their kids have available iron rich foods to bring a change in levels of iron in their body to optimal levels.

There are vegetables that are high in iron content. They include asparagus, broccoli, spinach, soybeans, and watercress. The foods, which are not vegetables but are rich in iron content, are chicken, clams, oysters, pork, turkey, liver, egg yolks, and some types of fish. These non-vegetable foods have the type of iron called Heme iron. It is recommended that infants should be made to take external sources of food rich in iron after the age of 4 months. Parents should look for their toddler’s cereals for kids rich in iron. When the baby has grown past cereal intake ages, parent can diversify food sources.

There are foods that children will not like, but are rich sources of iron. Such foods include liver, clams, or some types of vegetables. The kids have an option of taking iron-fortified foods; these are foods modified to include iron minerals in them. The foods could include grits, raisin bran cereal, or pasta among others. There is need to accompany iron rich foods with vitamin C rich foods in the diet of your baby. The vitamin C would help in absorption of iron in to the blood from the foods. The varieties of vitamin C foods are mostly fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and limes among others. Another option is to use fruit juices modified to have iron minerals. These are the major consideration in prevention of iron deficiency in you and the baby.
